I watched the video tonight posted by Jason. Great messages wrapped up in a very funny presentation. Would recommend watching it.

thanks for recommending the video. It was very clever and has made me reflect on the way I teach after watching it. Speaking of reflection. Today, I taught a student whom I have not seen for ages and I did my usual testing to see if he could recognise the sounding out of each letter of the alphabet and noted that he was struggling with three letters. They were I, U and V. By the way he is in year five and self doubt about his ability to read. He didn’t realize that there were only three letters of the alphabet that he didn’t know. I spent a bit of time trying to connect those sounds to the words he could relate. He was getting a bit restless and I asked him to do an integrated movement exercise on a swirly chair (something I downloaded from the Internet). The next activity was testing to see if he could recognize the PP Core words. At first he did not know the word “it” so I said to him, let’s sound it out because you know all the sounds of the alphabet. We managed to go through the PP core words. After all that, I was just about to send him back to his class when he said to me, “Miss, can you learn me for the rest of the day?”. I said maybe for another period. So with the next activity, I put him on PM Benchmark Reading at the magenta co our (1st stage). I have created an activity by cutting out all the pages from the book, separating the text from the visual cue(images). The student reads the text to the teacher. The text is removed from the storyboard and is mixed up. The student then reads the text for meaning and links it back to the story. At this reading stage, the PP Core words are being repeated in the story, so it has reinforced some of the words and sounds that the student has learned in the previous activities.
We managed to go through three books, then the student asked me. “Miss who is your favourite student in the whole school?” and I said,… you of course! Do you know why? Because you have shown me a lot of respect today. Look, you read three books to me. Good job. The student said something to make me feel better for the rest of my day ( I was feeling so tired and was trying not to show it). “Miss, can you learn me everyday and I will come to school everyday if you learn me.” Awwww…..
